OUR SERVICES

Wealth Management

This service is a bundled service, encompassing all parts of a Client’s financial life.  This bundle includes: Investment Management, General Financial Planning as well as Advanced Planning and Relationship Management.

 

  • General Financial Planning involves Retirement planning, Personal Financial planning, Family Financial planning, and Cash Flow planning.

  • Advanced Planning includes guidance and implementation for Tax, Insurance, Education, Real Estate, Retirement Distribution Strategies, Charitable giving, Legal and Estate planning.

  • Relationship Management involves coordinating and managing the Client’s expert team of professionals such as their Attorney, Accountant and Insurance professional.


Our goal is to simplify our Clients’ lives through a responsive, integrated approach and deliver the level of service and expertise that is needed, no matter the size or complexity.

This service bundles financial planning services and investment management together for one fee.

  • Clients with manageable assets of less than $750,000 receive Investment Management and General Financial Planning for a separate and additional annual fixed fee.

  • Clients with manageable assets greater than $750,000 will receive Investment Management, as well as General Financial Planning and Advanced Planning services for a single asset-based fee.

  • In addition, clients with manageable assets greater than $750,000 and less than $1,000,000 can elect to receive Relationship Management services for a separate and additional annual fixed fee.

  • Clients with manageable assets greater than $1,000,000 will receive Investment Management, General Financial Planning, Advanced Planning, and Relationship Management for one bundled asset-based fee.

Generally, the our fee structure is as follows:

(1) Investment Management Fee

(2) Clients that have less than $750,000 of manageable assets will pay an additional financial planning service fee.  Clients can select to opt out of the General Financial Planning services.

(3) Clients that have more than $750,000 of manageable assets will receive Advanced Planning services for no additional fee.

(4) Clients that have between $750,001 - $1 million can elect Relationship Mangement services for an additional fee.  Clients with more than $1 million of manageable assets will receive Relationship Management services for no additional fee.

Melody W. Townsend is the founding principal of Townsend Financial Planning, LLC, an independent financial planning and wealth management firm headquartered in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, with additional offices in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky.  Melody focuses on providing Fee-Only financial planning, investment advice, and second opinions to individuals, families and business owners.

 

Melody is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.  She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from Morehead State University.  To enhance her financial advisory practice, Melody is a member of the Garrett Planning Network and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (www.napfa.org).  These organizations take the fiduciary oath seriously—meaning they acknowledge they will act in the best interest of the client at all times and disclose conflicts of interest, if they arise.

 

Melody has always felt that her true calling is to serve as a personal financial planner. "In many households, there is a great deal of stress surrounding the topic of money because it can be difficult to understand all of the financial strategies and how they can help optimize ones current or future financial outcomes.  I want to help our clients better understand the value of financial planning, help them determine their goals, and then see how we can reach them.  I truly believe that with planning comes peace.”

 

Melody very much enjoys lasting relationships and communication with her clients,  and thus she truly enjoys working holistically with them utilizing the firm's wealth management services.  She feels this service allows her to provide a deeper level of service that her clients value.  In the previous 10 years of working primarily hourly, she found being on the clock left clients' questions unanswered and created a rushed, imperfect planning environment for many clients.  For others, planning was infrequent: Years would pass between portfolio reviews.  Many clients didn’t implement recommendations in a timely manner (or they implemented incorrectly), they did not rebalance their accounts regularly, they tried to time the market, or they simply got busy with the rest of their lives and sometimes ignored their finances.  Studies show these behaviors are very costly to investors.  She looks forward to continuing to grow her practice by helping her clients avoid many of the common pitfalls associated with trying to manage their investments themselves.

Melody has been quoted in national publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Advisor Magazine and USA Today.  She also enjoys serving her community as an elected official: Montgomery County Commissioner – District 3.

 

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband (Jason) and their two children (Anna & Alden) on their family farm.  Her professional goal is to build long-term relationships with her clients based on trust and integrity, and to continue to expand her business through referrals from satisfied clients.

Nick Bailey joined Townsend Financial Planning in December of 2016. Upon graduating from Morehead State University, with his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, he became a full-time Paraplanner. Then, in 2019, Nick passed his Series 65 Registered Investment Advisor Exam and became an Associate Planner. In April 2020, he completed the rigorous requirements to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.

 

Nick enjoys working with clients to develop meaningful relationships and helping them to achieve their financial goals.  His passion for learning and growing in the industry make him an essential part of the Townsend team.

He enjoys leading a small group of young men at his church and spending time with his wife (Terri) and their puppy (Mango).  His hobbies include hunting & kayak fishing.

Tammy Lynn Preston, FPQP

Lynn Preston has worked with Townsend Financial Planning since October of 2015, where she began as the Administrative Assistant. After earning her Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional™ certification from the College of Financial Planning, she now began to offer more client support in the role of Registered Para-planner. As the company has grown, she has transitioned to Office Manager. Lynn makes sure that everything runs smoothly. Her attention to detail and commitment to providing excellent customer service make her a vital part of the team. 

 

Before coming to Townsend Financial Planning, Lynn earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with an emphasis in Criminology from Morehead State University, and then received a Post Baccalaureate certificate in Paralegal Studies from Sullivan University. She enjoys spending time with her husband (Josh) and two children (Lucas & Olivia) and one fur kid (Peanut).  She also enjoys reading and making pottery when she finds spare time.

Cindy Emig, Client Service Specialist, is serving in our Louisville location.  After retiring early, Cindy came to Townsend Financial Planning with a wealth of business and technology knowledge.  She experienced the life-changing benefits of financial planning for herself, and this allowed her to retire early and make a career change and is taking the CFP coursework at Bellermine University. 

 

In her free time Cindy enjoys the great outdoors including hiking and kayaking.

Megan Howell has served as a Client Service Specialist at Townsend Financial Planning since July of 2018. Some of her job duties include coordinating client appointments and assisting with meeting preparation and follow-ups. She also helps clients with account paperwork and handles a lot of the administrative duties.  

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology from the University of Kentucky, Megan went on to earn a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from Morehead State University.

 

In her free time, she loves to write and travel with her husband (Clark), checking off states, National Parks, and Major League Baseball Parks around the country. She has two cats (S'more and Bryce).

The Process: 7 Steps to Financial Success

Initial Inquiry/Community Outreach

Our Responsibilities: Townsend Financial Planning, LLC, will provide a brief description of our services, philosophies, methodology, and fee structure.

 

Your Responsibilities: If our services fit your needs, we will schedule a free Get Acquainted Meeting, conducted in person or on the telephone, and at the same time provide you with additional information to help you learn more. We will also request you complete our Confidential Questionnaire in our RESOURCE CENTER section of the website.

FREE Get Acquainted Meeting/Teleconference

Our Responsibilities: We will meet with you free of charge in person or via teleconference. It's an opportunity to exchange information about your needs and objectives, to further discuss which of our services are right for you, and to provide you an estimate of the cost of our services. We do not accept commissions and instead charge for our services on an hourly (or portions of) or flat-fee basis.

 

Your Responsibilities: If you choose to use our services, we will provide a list of additional information that we will need to begin formulating your personal financial plan.

Data Gathering and Initial Preparation

Our Responsibilities: After receiving your information, we will begin to review and develop your custom financial plan. We will prepare initial reports that will be discussed with you at your next meeting.

Your Responsibilities: You will need to gather the requested data and then possibly complete a Risk Tolerance Questionnaire that we will provide. This information will need to be provided to us before your next meeting.

Interactive Goal Setting

Our Responsibilities: Depending on your individual circumstances, this meeting may or may not be necessary. If it is, it can be conducted in person or via teleconference. We will work with you to further discuss and clarify the information you have provided thus far and to refine your financial goals and objectives.

 

Your Responsibilities: This is another opportunity for you to clarify your current situation, financial goals and objectives, and to discuss with your advisor any additional questions and concerns.

Analysis and Plan Formulation

Our Responsibilities: We will refine the information you have provided and study various plan scenarios. We will provide analysis and research based on our findings and produce the final reports that include observations, assumptions, specific recommendations, and an action plan for your unique situation.

Your Responsibilities: The ball is in our court. All you have to do at this point is await your next meeting with us.

Presentation of Your Financial Plan

Our Responsibilities: We will meet to review your personal financial plan and our specific recommendations.

Your Responsibilities: Congratulations! You now hold your personal blueprint for financial success designed with your financial goals in mind. You are empowered with specific recommendations to implement your financial plan. If you wish, you may employ Townsend Financial Planning to further assist you in carrying out that plan as described under 'Our Services'.

Financial Checkups

Our Responsibilities: Periodic update meetings and reviews are essential to maintain good fiscal health. We can schedule these periodic meetings with you at whatever frequency you think appropriate, as scheduling allows.

Your Responsibilities: Financial planning is an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Proper implementation of a financial plan and periodic professional reviews are crucial to reaching your financial goals. We urge prompt attention. It's about your financial future!
